30.11.10 Califorinia Diner - 'Sarah Taylor Interview'

Earlier this month, we introduced Los Angeles singer-musician Sarah Taylor. I'd mentioned that she's had an illustrious career writing and recording theme songs for TV, commercials, and the movies, and working with the likes of Quincy Jones, Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Joe Cocker, and of course, her good friend Bill Mumy (who appeared on this show last month).

Well good news—it didn't take long to book her on the show! It turns out that she and her husband, engineer/mixer Paul Horabin, run a legendary recording studio, Readymix Music (formerly Browne's Feat), where rock luminaries Jackson Browne, Little Feat (hence the former name), Warren Zevon and more, made their magic happen. Sarah and Paul, with Bill Mumy as producer, recorded Sarah's debut disc The Cure To Everything at this historic studio. And to add to the whole cool vibe, she chatted to me from the kitchen at Readymix!

One day, Bill called Sarah and offered up a fresh batch of his songs for her to record. He encouraged her to put out a solo record. He already knew what a phenomenal voice and presence she has, and wanted the rest of the world to hear her too.

We'll get to hear about how the album came together, the mellow, relaxed vibe at Readymix, and the artistry and craftsmanship behind the songs. And I had to ask the question: “what's it like to work with “Weird Al” Yankovic?” You see, Sarah and Bill enlisted Al to play accordion on a couple of tracks. This is the first time I've ever heard of him doing session work (and non-comedy, for that matter), and he really does do a great job.

It was a fun lively chat, and we'll be treated to three of Sarah's wonderful songs. Can't wait for you to hear it!

23.11.10 Califorinia Diner - 'The 1st Anniversary Show!'

Well, this is it—one full year on Recharged Radio for Chef Mike and the Tuesday Night Diner. Show #50.

I'd thought my British colleagues had better taste than this, but instead, they let me onto their fantastic radio station!

A little over a year ago, we came to the mutual conclusion that we were of like mind, because Jordan, Alex, Minki, Dave, Justin, Rob, Jarrod, Samara, and Murray all liked great indie music and wanted to share it with the world. They had a great little station, still in its infancy, brimming with lots of attitude and even more great music. And as it happened, I had lots of great music to share with the world, and an American accent, and I stumbled upon Recharged Radio. After we both picked ourselves up off the ground and dusted ourselves off, we thought we'd give this thing a try. My show became something like the fifth show.

It seemed like a bit of a risk—a recently established UK radio station taking a chance on a guy from California. After all, it's not like I can just hop on over to the pub after the show, being 5,000 miles away from the station. But the miracle of the internet makes all good things possible. And so it goes.

Well, 50 Tuesday nights later, to quote a certain somebody at the end of my favorite Beatles album, “I hope I've passed the audition”! I've had a blast, and Recharged has given me the space to really play the kind of music I want to play on the radio. They've introduced me to lots of fantastic musicians and listeners. And we've grown to something like a couple dozen presenters and regularly-scheduled shows, up from the original five. There's literally something to listen to every single night of the week on our station, plus hundreds of hours of podcasts to grab and take with you when you feel like “goin' mobile”.

This week, we're going to feature some of the great artists who've made this show what it is today. And as a special treat, we'll have some guests drop by, say hello, and help me celebrate this anniversary. There'll be some serious long distance dropping by, as these musical and radio guests come from four different countries! And about halfway through the show, we'll have a very special announcement for you. Don't miss this one—it promises to be a good one!

16.11.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Adrenaline Nuggets'

What in the world is an adrenaline nugget? I'll bet you didn't know that adrenaline came in nuggets, did you?
Well in case you were wondering, and I assume you are, since you've read this far, adrenaline comes in many shapes and forms. It often happens when you get in trouble, or when you get nervous—taking a test, running late, going on that first date—all those uncomfortable life situations.
However, there is a form of adrenaline that I'm going to offer you this week that's a whole lot more palatable—music! This week's show features several little gems that will get your heart racing and stimulate your brain. If you listen to this week's show, you won't need to work out—these songs will raise your metabolism and burn calories!
We'll hear the likes of Sacramento band Go National, featuring Kevin and Allyson Seconds, whose brand of punky power pop has kept us Sacramentans jumping for years.

Washington, D.C.-based Vegas With Randolph have been keeping my blood racing fast since the last summer, with no signs of slowing down! They're feverishly finishing up their next album, and we'll grab a track off that and spin it for you.
My very favorite era of music, aside from the indie music of RIGHT NOW, would have to be the early 1990's alternative music, especially the stuff coming out of the UK. I love the atmospheric guitars, and bouncy beats. It's as if they took the best of 1980's music, got rid of the synthesizers and affected vocals, and kept all the good parts. Sound Sessions, from Leeds, UK, have nailed this sound perfectly, and brought it up to date for the 21st century. You'll hear a great example of what I'm talking about on this week's show.

09.11.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'The K's have it!'

To paraphrase the classic children's television show, Sesame Street, “this week's show is brought to you by the letter K”! Well, it's another one of those weeks where instead of me coming up with the format, the format comes up with itself!
You see, I just picked 30 or so great songs from my collection, just like I do every week. And as I started putting the playlist into a reasonable order, I found that a high percentage of these artists have names that begin with the letter K. So there's our theme for this week!
We visited with San Francisco Bay Area-based Kate Burkart a few weeks ago on the show. This week, we'll hear one of her elegant Americana tunes featuring her golden warm, intimate vocals.
www.kateburkart.com
Kaz Murphy is a Los Angeles-based Americana singer-songwriter. A few years ago, he put out what I consider to be one of the finest indie albums of the last decade, “Home For Misfits”. You'll get to hear a track from it and see why.
Kat Jones, originally from Fresno, California, moved to country music headquarters Nashville a few years back. But don't let her location fool you—she makes some of the most sultry, shimmery, and intense alternative music out there. We'll sample from her album La Rosa, La Calavera.
www.myspace.com/katjones
But if Kate, Kaz, and Kat weren't enough to show our appreciation for the letter K, we've got a New York City band on tap who actually named themselves after the eleventh letter of the alphabet, The K's! Energetic singer Dan Kilian (note the K in his name too) told me that the name stems from the crunchy sound of the letter, which exemplifies their music. We'll hear a timely track from this powerhouse band on the show.
Kate, Kaz, Kat, and the K's. What a great use of the letter K!

02.11.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Election Night Coverage!'

Well, as luck would have it, my show this week is held on the same day as the 2010 general elections here in the United States. This election is key to the future of our country. All eyes are watching us. Our future generations depend on it. And so, my fellow listeners, this week's show is completely devoted to the election. I will have two hours of up to the minute election returns for you...
NOT!!!
This is a flippin' music show, for crying out loud! If you want election coverage, go find yourself a good news station.
Okay, are the political people gone? Good. Now we can get down to business.
A couple of great new tracks by new artists for us surfaced this week. I found one here in California, and our intrepid music genius Alex Watson found the other in the UK.
Sarah Taylor has had a great career so far, writing and recording theme songs for TV, commercials, and the movies. She's worked with the likes of Quincy Jones, Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), and Joe Cocker. This year, she decided that it was time to get her solo career going. She called in some favors, and enlisted the likes of Bill Mumy (who we met here two weeks ago), Gerry Beckley (from pop band America), and Weird Al Yankovic, among others, to help create her solo debut The Cure To Everything. Much of it was written, and all of it produced, by long-time friend Bill Mumy. Lots of great songs in the Americana vein, and a funky, bluesy vibe permeates the whole album. Sarah has a great, supple, versatile husky voice that fits every scenario this team conjures up. We'll feature a track on this week's show.
Jay Fraser, a London-based singer-songwriter, was featured on our flagship show The Forum last Friday night. Alex discovered this bluesy-folky artist, and made sure the rest of us knew about him too. I listened to some of the songs on his MySpace player, and his sound ranges from mysterious to jaunty. He's already been introduced by Tom Robinson of BBC6, which is the perfect steppingstone to Recharged Radio! This guy is good, and we'll hear one of his more upbeat songs on this week's show.
Seriously, as far as elections go, if you are fortunate enough to live in a country where you are allowed to vote, please go do so every time you can. I joked about it earlier, but it is a right and a privilege, and your chance to shape the future.
