03.08.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Sweet!'

One of the best things we have here in Sacramento during the summer (besides air conditioning) is an event called the California State Fair. Sacramento is the capital of the state, and as such, gets to throw a 19 day long party every year. The idea is to show off as wide a variety of the bounty of California as possible. There are wine competitions, a rodeo, horse racing, livestock and agriculture exhibits, displays from each of the 58 counties that make up the Golden State, concerts, and food. Ah yes, the food. There's a huge variety of food available at the Fair, but the two varieties which garner the most attention are: Deep Fried, and Weird. And sometimes, they overlap.

There's always a new taste sensation each year which captures the fairgoers' collective imagination. One year, it was deep-fried Twinkies (snack cakes). Another year, deep-fried Snickers (candy bars). And still another year—somebody came up with a concoction called deep-fried Coke. Really! I think it was some kind of dough saturated in Coca Cola, then deep-fried. I've only tried the first one, and it was actually pretty good. Egg roll on a stick was another innovation. And this year, there was a food stand which brought the worlds of dining and danger together. They sold deep-fried scorpion. I don't think I'd try that without deep-fried antidote.

None of these ever goes away, much to the chagrin of local nutritionists—the menus just grow longer over the years. But the latest addition to the menu this time around was: chocolate-covered bacon. Yes, it's exactly what you think—a half strip of bacon, coated in milk chocolate. And yes, it sounds strange, but strange doesn't mean bad. I tried it, and it was quite good! Sweet, salty, smoky, and creamy, all together in one cholesterol-laden bite. Delicious.

So that's one thing I won't be serving on the Tuesday Night Diner anytime soon—it's best left for the Fair. Another thing I won't be serving on the Tuesday Night Diner—Weird Al Yankovic. We did indeed catch his two hour musical comedy romp through the last 30 or so years of pop culture, and it was wonderful. Highly recommended fun—but alas, we at Recharged Radio are always on the lookout for the best and brightest of the indie musicians out there.

But we do have a couple of sweet musical treats from Los Angeles for patrons of this week's Tuesday Night Diner. Michael Miller is a singer/songwriter who's making a name for himself in the Americana community in L.A. He released an album called “I Made You Up”, which features some haunting and enchanting tunes. He works very much in the acoustic and downbeat vein. We're going to hear a track that will stay with you for a long time. If you're in Sacramento tonight (August 3), be sure to catch his show at Luna's Cafe.

Nushu, the fun power-pop duo of Lisa Mychols and Hillary Burton, released a masterful, upbeat album just in time for spring and summer, Hula. You NEED this music when the weather is warm, and you'll need it even more when the weather turns cold, to remind you of summer. The two are massively talented, as they handle nearly every songwriting, instrumental, and vocal task on Hula by themselves. I recently discovered the hidden track at the end of the album—and it's the backing tracks and vocals to another song on the record, but turned into a really sweet kids song. It's got to do with learning how to read, and this one's going through my head and making me want to become more literate while rocking out! The Tuesday Night Diner schedulers have tentatively penciled me in to catch their Orange County, Southern California show on August 15 (road trip!)

Program note: this Tuesday night's schedule is fully loaded: Rob One and the 20/20 Hip Hop show start the festivities at 7:00 p.m., I'm up at 8:00, and Fiona Ledgard's Anything Goes Evening Show makes its return to the airwaves at 10:00. Sweet!

If you'd like to make a request, just drop me a line at mike(at)rechargedradio.com. If you'd like to become an honorary California citizen, drop me a line at the same address. And if you'd like to hear all this great music—simply tune in to the Tuesday Night Diner, Tuesday night, 8:00-10:00 p.m. (GMT), 12:00-2:00 p.m. Pacific, only at Recharged Radio—www.rechargedradio.com.
