31.09.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'The Corner Laughers Take Over!'

It's no secret—since the San Francisco-based Corner Laughers stormed onto my playlists at the beginning of this year with their magnificent Ultraviolet Garden album, they've become one of my favorite bands. They manage to create cool,  sophisticated alternative sounds, without being labeled or typecast in any particular style.

Singer and songwriter Karla Kane plays ukulele on stage, and manages to turn it into an alternative rock instrument. Very few “old-timey” sounds—but on a couple of songs, the uke tricks me into thinking it's a keyboard. How's that for versatility? And don't forget that sweet, but all-knowing voice of hers.

Co-songwriter and stellar lead guitarist Angela Silletto's presence loomed large on that album, but she left the group over the summer to move to another part of the country. She was replaced by the equally stellar KC Bowman, who adds additional musicianship, wit, and fun to an already fun lineup.

Khoi Huynh is the rock behind the band. His fluid bass playing can actually be heard in the mix, both live and on record, and it's a perfect flowing river to help carry the other lead instruments. His harmony vocals blend perfectly with Karla's. He's got a wealth of musical connections. In short, Khoi is the Corner Laughers' secret weapon. No Khoi, and it's a very different band.

Charlie Crabtree is the powerhouse drummer who propels the band. Just listen to the crisp snap of the snare drums on “For The Sake Of The Cat”, and you'll realize that this guy, and this band, mean business. Just nimble, lively playing to keep things moving.

I told you all that to tell you this: The Corner Laughers pay us a visit this week. Karla, Khoi, and Charlie spend an hour with us playing DJ's. They bring 10 tracks of their own (plus I chose one of theirs to play). They've been a busy band over the last 8 months since I first met them, and they walk us through the year 2010, as seen from a Laughers perspective, using music. We all had a fun time, and they made my job easy, as I just sat back, relaxed, and let them run my show.

Program note: Fiona Ledgard's Anything Goes Evening Show follows the Tuesday Night Diner this week. It's a wonderfully eclectic mix of interviews, live sessions, ambient field sounds, and recorded tracks. Don't miss it!

24.08.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Laurie Larson Session!'

When you do radio, it's good to have musical friends. One of my friends, the very talented Laurie Larson, joins me in the studio this week.

Recently, an interesting thing happened to her one night in her sleep—she literally dreamed up a brand new song called “All Year Long”--including the arrangement, and some tricky signature changes that made this pedestrian DJ lose his place when trying to drum along to them in the studio! It's a really elegant, sophisticated song. And my show has been honored with being the first place in the world to debut this wonderful track! One of my listeners who recently heard her perform described her voice as “angelic”. I wouldn't disagree.

But that's not all. Laurie grabs her Stratocaster and plays us a couple of live tunes in our Sacramento studio as well. One of these songs features an...ah...um...er--“guest vocal”--yeah, that's it--featuring yours truly. You'll quickly find out why I have a day job. But Laurie's a good sport, and we share a few laughs as this all comes together.

But wait—there's a lot more than that. This week, we feature several debut tracks, never before served up by your Chef Mike. It's always good to expand the menu, and we'll hear from such artists as Anny Celsi, Brave Chandeliers, and Four Out Of Seven. You'll love these tracks—that's why the Diner put them there!

10.08.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Free Stuff Again!'

Yes, you read it correctly. We at Recharged Radio have an abundance of stuff, and we'd like to give it to you, absolutely free. Why? Well, because we love you. That part's obvious—that's why we keep coming back each night to play you great music. But the other reason is that goodies do nobody any good if they're locked up in a closet. They want to fly and be free. So help us liberate these free goodies.

So what are we giving away? I have absolutely no idea! But I have a feeling that these goodie bags are probably somewhat music or radio related—it just stands to reason. In fact—I'm gonna ask for some of this stuff myself. I love surprises, and this should be cool.

Here's what you do. Send an email to studio(at)rechargedradio.com. Tell us you want some free stuff sent to you. Tell us that Chef Mike sent you. And most importantly—include your name and mailing address. A nice person in London, England will pop an excellent assortment of free stuff into the mail, or post, or whatever it's called in your country, and it'll be in your hot little hands in no time.

Oh yeah—there's music too. A wide and wild variety of stuff that is frankly, never heard together on the radio in the same place. But that's where we differ. The Tuesday Night Diner has a pretty wild menu, and we're gonna mix it all up for you. Debuts from Rose Reiter, Nicholas Alan, Vegas With Randolph, and more. I can't wait to play these amazing indie artists for you!

If you'd like to make a request, just drop me a line at mike(at)rechargedradio.com. If you'd like to become an honorary California citizen, drop me a line at the same address. And if you'd like to hear all this great music—simply tune in to the Tuesday Night Diner, Tuesday night, 8:00-10:00 p.m. (GMT), 12:00-2:00 p.m. Pacific, only at Recharged Radio—www.rechargedradio.com.
