25.05.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'International Pop Overthrow Liverpool!'

An amazing thing is going down in Liverpool this week. The International Pop Overthrow (IPO) Liverpool festival is a yearly chance for music fans to hear over 120 bands in about a week's time, all for free, at the world famous Cavern Club and Pub. You know, the place that launched the Beatles! The festival runs from May 25 through June 1, and you won't want to miss it.

To celebrate, we'll do a radio show within a radio show! This 40+ minute program is jam packed with interviews with a few of the artists who will grace the stage of the world renowned Cavern Club. We’ll also hear their music, and a special interview with the IPO’s founder, David Bash. I chatted with folks in four different countries, and can’t wait for you to hear what it all sounds like! I'm especially excited about Maxi Dunn and Laurie Biagini performing on the same stage together, and Peter Hackett playing in Maxi's band during her sets! I also had the chance to chat with Fabrizio and Andrea from the Italian band Soundserif. And lastly, one of our up and coming favorite bands, Buzz Radio, will also have their place on the main stage as well!

I can't be there, because I'm 5,000 miles away. But if you're anywhere near Liverpool this week, you owe it to yourself to experience this great festival. Let the music play!

18.05.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Nor-Cal and So-Cal Musical Legends!'

Here on the Tuesday Night Diner, I often try to serve my listeners a taste of my home state of California. It`s a pretty big place—if you don`t believe me, just Google a map of the United States with state names on it. It takes up more than half of the West Coast. If you superimposed it on the East Coast, it would literally stretch from New York City to southern Georgia. Wow.

Okay, enough of the geography lesson for today. But since it`s such a big place, I thought I`d represent both halves of it in tonight`s show.

When I first met the Corner Laughers a few months ago, they surprised me and brought along the legendary KC Bowman. They just introduced him as “KC Bowman”, but as the interview progressed, they started referring to him as legendary, and it just kind of stuck in my head that way. I almost can`t think of his name without putting “legendary” in front of it!

KC is from the San Francisco Bay Area, and has made quirky, intellectual pop music his stock in trade. He`s in a band called the Preoccupied Pipers, he`s in a new project with various Corner Laughers called the Agony Aunts, and he`s made some brilliant, sunny pop records on his own. His clever lyrics are noteworthy. Sometimes the songs are short—about a minute or so—always leaving you wanting more. Well, for those who want more—just play it twice! He sent me his late 1990`s album Fresher Tin Villages, and we`ll feature one of the tracks on this week`s show.

Nashville, Tennessee. Music City. The world`s capital of country music. Nope, it`s not in California, and there`s a reason for that. Tennessee is wide where California is tall—and therefore, it simply won`t fit! But besides the geographic contrast in the shapes of the two states, there`s a difference in musical styles as well. Although some of the best-known classic country music was made in Nashville—and to their credit, is still the predominant musical style on the Grand OleOpry (broadcast every Saturday night)--at some point, things changed in Nashville. It wasn`t recent—it happened somewhere in the 1970s or 1980s. A good example is the legendary Dwight Yoakam. He couldn`t find musical success in Nashville—legend has it that he was told that his sound was “too country”. Pathetic. But obviously not debilitating. He simply moved to Los Angeles, and became a huge superstar. His biggest influences included Buck Owens and Merle Haggard (Bakersfield, California).

I told you that to tell you this. Skip Heller wrote and performed the single finest country song I`ve heard in the last decade. And he`s based in Los Angeles. So there! I was kind of surprised to read in one of his biographies online that he started in jazz, back in Philadelphia. And he mentioned to me once that he had the honor of playing in NRBQ for a short time, filling in for Johnny Spampinato. You need serious chops to keep up with those guys! Like Dwight—his music actually means something. It`s not that fluffy Southern pop that comes out of Nashville. It`s painstakingly-crafted songwriting that reaches into the inner depths of your soul, and makes you feel something. And it sounds good too. If you`re not a country fan—do me just this one favor. Listen to Skip Heller. It might change the way you think about this genre. Oh yeah—that great song I mentioned? I`ll be playing it on this week show for you!

11.05.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'We`re Baaa-aack!'

Did you miss me? Well I certainly missed you! You see, Tuesday Night Diner was preempted last week, and for a very good cause—a live event! It was a gig—several bands on the bill—to protest the BBC shutting down BBC6 radio. Although the politics of this escape me—a good radio station being shut down, and perhaps a lousy one being put up in its place—that sort of thing could never happen here in America (okay—attempting to pull tongue out of cheek now)--live, unadulterated radio, beaming across the globe is a beautiful thing. I was happy to make way for this Recharged Radio event.

But that was then, and this is now. Your very own personal Chef Mike is back to reclaim my spot on the air, and I`ve got a stellar lineup of music for you.

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Beth Thornley put out a stunning album this year called Wash U Clean. Melodic, mostly piano-driven tunes that stay with you long after you turn off your music player—seriously, I`ve gone for long walks with Beth`s tunes playing in my head! The album was carefully crafted by producer Rob Cairns. But did you know that Beth is aspiring to be an etymologist? Well, perhaps not really—etymology is the study of words and their origins. But some etymologist is going to be studying a phrase that Beth coined in the track that we`ll be playing on this week`s show.

Time for some hometown pride. Yes indeed, a couple of acts originally from Northern California are going to be performing live next Monday, May 17th, at our home base of Maple St. Studios in London. Former Sacramentan Anton Barbeau, who`s something of a legend around these parts, now lives in the UK. He`ll be bringing his quirky, good-natured brand of Robyn Hitchcock-influenced tunes to our flagship studios. (For an advance, check out the “Ant `N Al” edition of Tuesday Night Diner on the Listen Again player on the home page of www.rechargedradio.com.) We`ll hear one of the tracks off of his current album, Plastic Guitar.

Half of the San Francisco-based Corner Laughers—Karla Kane and Khoi Huynh, are touring the UK, and will also be at Maple St. that night. For those of you not yet in the know, their current album Ultraviolet Garden is a standout in the bumper crop of excellent albums I`ve received this year (sorry, everybody else!). Who else but the Laughers could create intellectual, quirky, bouncy and moody alternative pop tunes armed with nothing but guitar, bass, drums, and ukulele! Oh yeah, and their perfect girl-pop harmonies and gift for clever lyrics. We`ll hear a representative track off of Ultraviolet Garden.
