19.10.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Bill Mumy'

This week, we have yet another brush with greatness. And it doesn't get much greater than this.

We've been waiting for this news for a while, and now it can be told: Bill Mumy, the legendary American actor/singer-songwriter/voiceover artist/radio guy (sorry–I’m running out of slashes here) will be joining us on this week's Tuesday Night Diner.

As you most likely know, unless you’ve been somewhere else for the last several decades, Bill is a really well known television actor. He was “Will Robinson” on the classic sci-fi TV series Lost In Space. (You know, when people say “danger, Will Robinson”? Yes, THAT Will Robinson!) He was also in several episodes of the Twilight Zone, most notably in the “Cornfield Kid” episode. He was in Babylon Five. And the list goes on, but since I’m paying by the character, I’ve got to cut it short (I’m kidding!).

Your homework—before you listen to the show, is to Google Bill, or go to his website www.billmumy.com. You might not think you know him, but once you see his pictures, and his incredible list of credits, both screen and music, you will realize that you do know who I'm talking about.

Here on Recharged Radio, we’re especially interested in Bill’s music, and he just released a heck of a fine album called Glorious In Defeat. It’s a bluesy affair, written with a keen observer’s eye and performed and produced solely by Bill. We’ll learn what went into the crafting of these songs, and a little more about his musical past. We’ll even ask the hard-hitting question about what inspired him to write the novelty classic “Fish Heads”, during his Barnes and Barnes years!

12.10.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Lindy LaFontaine'

This week, we have a brush with greatness. Vocalist/songwriter Lindy LaFontaine once attended a performing arts academy in Liverpool, UK, which happens to have a really cool headmaster: none other than Sir Paul McCartney himself! She was even given private songwriting lessons by the Beatle himself. Wow! True story. And this academy is so selective, they didn't accept her until AFTER she was accepted by legendary American academies Juilliard and Berklee.

So this tells you something about the caliber of talent we're dealing with here. She's a superb vocalist, and she's currently creating an album of finely crafted trip hop songs. She introduces us Americans to this genre which is well established in the UK.

She brings a world view to the music, and even to our interview. Her earliest memories are of Bangladesh, after which her parents moved her to Cairo, Egypt, where she grew up. Cairo left such an imprint on her formative years that her band's name is a variant spelled as KYRO. She lived on both the east and west coasts of the U.S., and of course, there was that once in a lifetime stint in Liverpool. But finally, she calls Northern California's San Francisco Bay Area home. We're lucky to have her here. Listen to her voice, and be enchanted!

05.10.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Sneak Previews'

Believe it or not, being on radio gives me special powers. I have developed a sixth sense: musical clairvoyance. I can reach into the future, and see which unreleased albums you'll be buying this fall and winter!

Dave Stephens has a vision. He wrote around 60 songs, whittled them down to just enough to fit on an album. He then polished them, and recorded them in his Long Beach, California studios. The album is in the can, ready to go. Only one thing left to go before his Time Will Tell release can hit the streets: money to manufacture and promote it.

This is where you can help. Right now, Dave's got a Kickstarter campaign in progress to help him fund Time Will Tell. Once you hear his songs, you're going to want to buy the album anyway. But if you pre-order it, and kick in money at a specified level, you'll get the disc when it's ready, and/or a digital download. Spencer Berger. Wow—can you make a sentence using just a proper name, like I just did? Sure you can, if it's the Los Angeles-based vocalist who we've championed here at Recharged Radio for the last year-plus. He's just that good!

When Alex and Jordan discovered this incomparable singer, his band's name was Field. He put together an album called Be Brave, and had it mastered, but still hasn't released it yet. I was trying to “be brave” and patiently wait for the release, but nothing. Finally—I found out why it's not out yet. Because Spencer changed his band name to Auditorium. Seems there was some confusion with other bands who go by the same name. So Auditorium it is. Be Brave looks like it's now on track for release in January 2011. In the meantime, we'll play one of his great songs, and you'll hear exactly why you should save up your allowance money for this one now.

If you've listened to the Tuesday Night Diner at all over these last 10 months on the air, then you've undoubtedly heard Liverpool singer-songwriter Maxi Dunn. Her dramatic, personal, and quite listenable pop songs are by turns charming and intense. She released her debut album nearly a year ago, and immediately charged ahead into her next one, The Neglected Gambit. She's let me listen to several of the advance tracks, and I can tell you that this is going to be a great album.

Maxi again teams up with super producer Pete Hackett, from Cult of Wedge, to bring her vision to life. Theirs is an interesting partnership—it's cyber! They live a couple of hours apart, so she records vocals, and sends massive audio files to Pete over the internet. He adds instrumentation and production, and together, they shape an album from far-flung locations. And you know what? It works! They have the push and pull of an intuitive artist-producer relationship, and it makes for great music. We'll hear a track from Gambit, scheduled for release in early 2011.

28.09.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Kate Burkart Edition'

Francisco-based singer-songwriter Kate Burkart. This Americana-tinged artist cut her teeth on the dry, dusty, western plains of...Boston? She writes her melodies on that most noble of all composition instruments...electric bass? And she sings her brave, gritty songs of heartbreaks, breakups, and messy endings with...a warm, silky smooth voice?

Yes, contradictions abound. But Kate recently recruited some elite musicians, and released a fine album, Faith To Fall. I was like a kid in a candy store when I finally got to talk music with her. She gamely fielded all my questions—both on and off the air--about how this came together. We'll sample some gems off the album, and learn about her upcoming gigs, and even why a singer-songwriter would pick up the bass as her first instrument. It was a fun chat, and we'll also hear a track from another incredible singer-songwriter who shared a bill with her, Lindy LaFontaine.

21.09.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'The Great Migration'

My city of Sacramento, California is located in what we call the great Central Valley. It's truly one of the more prominent topographical features in the United States. It's a long, narrow, flat valley, about 450 miles long, and oh, I don't know, about 50-80 miles wide, depending on where you are. If you took Tennessee and turned it 90 degrees, you'd pretty much have it. It takes up about half of the state of California. Hot and dry in the summer, cold and alternatively rainy and foggy in the winter. Beautiful springs and summers. It's home.

When you think of California, chances are, you've never thought about the Central Valley. Usually, you think of the coastal cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. And people in these well-known places likely think of the Valley as, oh, I don't know—the Australian outback, or the Midwestern prairies of the United States. But I'm here to tell you that 6.5 million of us Valley residents can't be wrong.

A place this big certainly has some music history. Cake, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Papa Roach, Tesla, and many others started here. (M.C. Hammer lives here!) Some stayed. But there's also a contingent of great indie artists who started here and moved on to other places. Am I sad they left? Sure...but they're now making great music in their new hometowns, and they should be applauded and celebrated. And that's exactly what we do on the Tuesday Night Diner.

Keyboardist Ben Morss was a fixture on the Sacramento scene a decade ago. His band, the Pilgrims, was always a favorite—pop songs, some veering into exuberant wackiness. He made the move to New York City, started Onward Chariots, and has created some brilliant pop gems.

Anton Barbeau was, and still is, legendary around these parts. He's one of the most prolific artists we've ever seen here, and although he's heavily influenced by such eccentrics as Robyn Hitchcock and Julian Cope, he's not above having fun. Well now, we've had to share him with Cambridge, England, on the condition that we get him back here once in a while.

Michael Miller's hometown of Sacramento let him go before they really knew what they were missing (and I say “they”, because, for the record, I had nothing to do with this!). His base of operations is Los Angeles, and he draws upon the huge pool of world-class session talent there to help him put together some really great, mellow Americana music

Fresno, our sister city to the south, is where it all started for Rich McCulley. He started with Sparklejet back in the 1990's as one of the singer/songwriter/guitarists for the band. They were making some great roots rock. However, they split. Sparklejet went for the hard rock sound, and Rich followed his heart to the world of Americana. No problem—I now have TWO bands that I love. He's a big part of the L.A. music scene—not just recording his own, but producing, recording, and doing session work for others.

14.09.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'I Gave At The Office!'

You know, with these radio shows, sometimes you write the theme. Other times, the theme writes you.

I started the playlist and the show this week with a completely open mind. No game plan, other than the usual offbeat mix of great music from all genres, which somehow, magically, blends together nicely. I guess as your radio musical chef, I'm expected to do this.

But I really didn't have any preconceived notions of what this week's theme would be. I toyed with the idea of calling it “Life Begins at 40”, because this is the 40th episode of the Tuesday Night Diner. But that doesn't speak so much to my longevity as it does to the tolerance of my friends and colleagues here at Recharged Radio!

But as I got into the show, I realized that, through no fault or effort of my own, a theme was starting to emerge. Whoo-hoo—saved again. So the theme is “I gave at the office”. There are two songs that led me to this obvious conclusion.

Remember that guy you worked with, the “artist”, who doesn't want to make any more copies? Sure you do. And Los Angeles-based The Clutter Family, led by Jim Earl and Chris Hobbs, wrote a song all about him, and you'll hear it on this week's show.

And then, of course, there's that hot receptionist. You know, the one where the married guys all stop by her desk, and linger a little too long. She's got the self-esteem problems, and these bozos aren't helping things. Is she hot because she sits under the heating vent, or because, well, she just is? Jesus H. Christ and the Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse, from New York City, wrote a song which answers that question, and many more.

07.09.10 Tuesday Night Diner - 'Boomchick and Bill Mumy!'

So much new music this week, I'm almost embarrassed.

Well, not really. I don't embarrass that easily. In reality, I'm honored and thrilled that it found its way to me, and that you now get to hear it too.

Suzanne Benorden has been on my radar for a few years now. The Eugene, Oregon singer/songwriter just released a brand new album with the band she leads, Boomchick. The album is called Joyland, and it's been described as “punkabilly rock”, and compared with PJ Harvey, White Stripes, Dinosaur Jr., and more. Personally, I hear a bit of early Liz Phair, but with a wider world view. While Liz was righteously angry at the superficial guys who done her wrong, Suzanne is righteously angry at the countries who are building empires by forcing themselves on other countries. There's songs about familial estrangement—the parents missing out on their grandkids growing up, because they see their own kids as black sheep. And there's some fun too. Joyland itself is a legendary amusement park in her hometown of Wichita, Kansas, and the title track brings back great childhood memories. Oh yeah—and it rocks too!

Bill Mumy is a legendary American actor. He started his career as a child, and you probably know him from his role in the television series “Lost In Space”, or in THAT episode of Twilight Zone—you know, where all the adults ran scared of his supernatural powers. He's been in countless other television series, notably Babylon 5. But we can't see any of that on the radio—here at Recharged Radio, we're all about the music. And oh yes, Bill's done lots of that too. Back in the 1970's and 1980's, he was half of the novelty musical duo Barnes and Barnes, and serenaded my teenage years with such songs as Fish Heads and Party in my Pants.

I recently had the opportunity to connect the dots. As silly and amusing as the Barnes and Barnes songs were, I didn't realize until now that they were created by this versatile artist. Fast forward to last week. I just received his brand new release, Glorious In Defeat. It's a great blues album. Top notch songwriting, playing, and singing. Bill has a rough-hewn bluesy voice which breathes just the right amount of emotion and authenticity into this baker's dozen of songs. Glorious In Defeat takes a look at today's world, and reports back to us in the form of musical narratives.
